The world's most famous spy is being hunted by the KGB, and he will need all his wits to negotiate the labyrinth of double-crosses that will lead him to a showdown in a remote corner of Hong Kong.

Between the Danish island of Bornholm and the Baltic coast of East Germany a nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy surfaces under the cloak of darkness. James Bond and two marines slip quietly from the forward hatch into their powered inflatable raft and set off for a lonely beach where they are to collect two young women. Planted to seduce communist agents to run for cover in the West, they have been rumbled by the other side. Bond little knows that this routine exercise is but the prelude to a nerve-racking game of bluff and double bluff, played with consummate skill by his own chief M against the East German HVA and the elite branch of the KGB, formed from Bond's old adversary SMERSH.

The KGB is soon on the scene, but nothing is what it seems, and Bond finds he needs all his wits to negotiate the labyrinth of double-crosses that will lead him to a bewildering showdown in a remote corner of the Kowloon province of Hong Kong. There, with only the trusted belt of secret weapons specially devised by Q branch, he has to fight a terrifying duel in the dark, with all the cards in the hands of his opponents.

Review :
many a boring moment
This book is quite good, but is made worse by many pointless complicated plot twists and boring sequences. The highlights are the shootout at the castle, the car escape from the castle and the hunt at the end.The difference between John Gardner's books and Ian Fleming's is that Ian Fleming's 007 stays in casinos and drinks martinis, but Gardner's stays in hotels and drinks coffee, which isn't nearly as fun.

No Deal and Great Thrills
John Gardner has done it again. Bond finds himself outside the official ring of MI6 on this mission and I personally couldn't put the book down. Bond's clever planning and Q Branches gadgets come in handy in this story. Great plot and fun read earns my 5 Star review!

Why Hasn't This Story Hit The Theatre?
John Gardner writes a classic James Bond tale full of misdirection, mystery, intrigue, sexiness, and the stone cold nature of 007! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would love to see Daniel Craig star in a version of this tale although the Cold War aspect provides challenges here. This is a great spy novel!

Following the success of his bestselling novel White Sister, Stephen J. Cannell's latest blockbuster has Detective Shane Scully fighting to save a man railroaded for murder, while his wife, Alexa, has become a total stranger to him

A small-time crook is doing life in California's notoriously brutal Corcoran State Prison for the murder of his mother. He admitted to the crime, but now he claims his confession was coerced by the cops. A beautiful Internal Affairs detective, Secada "Scout" Llevar, asks Shane to help investigate, and he agrees after learning the original homicide detective was Brian Devine, a ruthless cop with whom Scully has a bad history.

What begins as a routine review quickly turns into something much more deadly. The case is abruptly shut down by an LAPD deputy chief, and Shane begins to suspect that for unknown reasons the prisoner really may have been framed by the police. But some things, once started, cannot be stopped, and the investigation spirals dangerously out of control, implicating a violent Hispanic gang, a millionaire power broker, and the front-runner in the Los Angeles mayoral race.

Meanwhile, Shane and Alexa struggle to save their marriage, which has come perilously close to disintegration since Alexa's near-fatal shooting in White Sister—just as Shane finds himself attracted to his new partner. Could the answer to their marital troubles be tied to the case he's investigating? In Cannell's latest heart-pounding thriller, Shane is tried in ways he has never been, risking his family, his job, and his life.

Review :
Not up to the usual standard
This book is definitely two stories instead of one. The first story is character development for Shane and Alexa. For those that don't follow the series, Alexa is recovering from a severe head injury that has produced severe behavioral effects. The second story is a generic corrpution mystery.

I've been following the Shane Scully series from the Tin Collectors. I'm an avid fan. For those that have read previous books and are interested in the Shane/Alexa personal development saga after White sister, buy the book used. If you're new to the series, start with Viking Funeral or Vertical Coffin instead and work forward chronologically.

In fact, it saddens me to say this, but I'm a little disappointed in the book. There were many incongruities in the relationship story and many loose ends left unresolved. Alexa's numerous behavioral transformations are hard to believe. The speed at which Alexa and Shane's marital problems appear to get resolved defies...
White-knuckle climax
As much as I hate to admit it, WHITE SISTER, the sixth Shane Scully novel, somehow slipped by me. So I was a little shocked to find that Scully's unique and successful marriage to his department's chief was being strained and in danger of failing. It seems that a head wound that Alexa suffered in that book has left her with severe personality changes, which has Scully wondering what happened to the woman he married. And when Secada "Scout" Llevar, a beautiful investigator from Internal Affairs, asks him to look into a case, his previously monogamous feelings are tempted to wander.

Though Stephen J. Cannell is certainly not known as a romance writer, he always manages to include enough of a tender backstory to add dimension to his street-wise, tough-guy characters. He has a brilliant knack for creating people who are at once realistic and bigger than life. They are quick thinking, fast talking and capable --- perhaps willing to bend the rules but always with the goal of...
Shane Scully takes his career to the edge
While Shane and Alexa Scully are trying to sort out their lives, both personal and professional, after Alexa's head trauma (from White Sister - the 6th Shane Scully novel), Shane is approached by Detective Secada "Scout" Llevar, an Investigating Officer with Professional Stardards (part of the I.A. Division) with an interesting case. A young meth-addict named Truit Hickman is serving twenty-five-to-life in California's notorious Corcoran Prison for killing his mother, and Scout believes the boy is innocent. She asks Shane to help her investigate the case even though there's a confession from Tru, and it's been closed by hard-nosed Captain Jane Sasso.

What Shane discovers is Miguel Iglesia, who now goes by Mike Church, is a far more likely suspect. But Church, Tru's friend, has some serious ties to power, through millionaire Wade Wyatt. Wyatt is the spoiled son of big-time attorney Aubrey Wyatt, and a Police Commissioner of a tiny police force for the tiny North Van Nuys...

At 7:00 am in a Boston boardroom, there's a disaster in the making. High in an office tower in the heart of the financial district, lawyers and bankers are fighting a deadline to close an $840,000,000 leveraged buyout.  Under the pressure of the crowded agenda, no one notices that a zero has been dropped from the mortgage document.  The papers are signed, cheers and applause roar from the boardroom--and the fuse of a time bomb is lit.  When it explodes, there will be hell to pay.  As the partners of Freer, Motley, the presiding law firm, will discover, they are collectively and personally liable to their client to make up the multimillion-dollar shortfall.

And so begins an accelerating and dire chain of events.  Freer, Motley's senior partner is found dead, and its brightest young associate is charged with murder.  The firm needs a fall guy, and John Shepard, brilliant but arrogant--and recently passed over for partner--fills the role to perfection.  Defending John Shepard in a Boston court is going to be a career buster.  No one wants the job, and no one understands why Ed Mulcahy accepts the case, even if he is Shepard's friend--but they don't know that he's already in way too deep to walk away.

On a par with Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent, The Deal is the most exciting new legal thriller from a first-time author to be published in years.  Written by a young partner with one of Boston's prestigious old firms, it is an utterly authentic view of the city's judicial system, from the ex-con informants, paid for their evidence, to the district attorney who needs a conviction for the sake of his political career.  It is also the compelling story of two young lawyers--a defendant and his attorney--realizing too late that they are up against an old-guard establishment more powerful than they could ever imagined.

Review :
If you liked 'A Civil Action' - you'll love 'The Deal'
This is a fast-paced Boston legal intrigue. There is a mega-deal with an apparent typo - that hands $830,000,000 back to the buyer. No one knows who was responsible at the law firm for the (?)misprint in the deal. Then the senior partner on the deal is found murdered, and his associate is (?falsely) accused. He appeals to his buddy to defend him with only 13 days to build a case... It is superbly written - with suspense and excellent dramatic timing that leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat. It has a wonderful Boston feel, a background love story - I loved it.

one of the tops in its genre
I came across THE DEAL while looking for a financial thriller. But this one got me completely hooked, I read it at night, during lunch breaks, and I finished it in less than 48 hours. As an IB, I love to read books involving fictious deal making, although Willett's book isn't about investment bankers, I can relate to the time pressure in the beginning of the book. A great book for anyone who's interested in legal and financial area.

Great characters, often funny, non-lawyers don't be afraid
I am a lawyer. Lawyers come in many ways. Litigators, corporate, prosecutors, senior corporate, associates, district attorneys, paralegals <well they are not lawyers> and others. They all do different things, as distinct as a bromelia is from an emu. Mr. Willett places them all here. And from my experience, he does a good job with them. They are funny per se. I don't think that this is a lawyers-only humor. The story is set in Boston. Imagine a deal whereby a bank gives some people money to buy a company. And, as you know, banks do not lend money, big money that is, without some collateral. Well the collateral is a big building in Manhattan. And some lawyer made a mistake whereby the collateral is worth $800,000,000 less than it is suppose to be worth. And then there is a murder. All hell breaks loose. The Harvard attorney who dealt the deal is indicted, his Northeastern pupil has to defend him, people get fired, crippled techies are shot at, and time is...

Review :
Felt the build up between Serena and Bryan worked really well and realistically.
Whenever I'm in need of a good, steamy read the Brazen line is always a good choice. I have read a few other books by Christine Bell and was excited to see she was coming out with another Brazen. Although I did not read the first book in the Perfectly Matched series, I was still able to follow along with this one- though now I want to go back and read Grace and Trick's story!

Pacing: Christine's stories are always fast paced, sexy reads. I felt the build up between Serena and Bryan worked well and realistically. They are attracted to one another, and while they act on that attraction, it isn't until later that they realize feelings are involved.

Storyline: Neither Serena nor Bryan are looking for love. They are thrown together due to scheming best friends and siblings and despite their red hot attraction to one another, find they need one another for different reasons. Serena needs Bryan to be the face of their matchmaking company and Bryan needs Serena to...

Been there...read that...

I had much higher hopes than this one ended up delivering on. The story starts out cute enough but then quickly falls into the same old tired routine of two people who are jaded on love and think that they have found the perfect "no emotions, sex only" relationship that both will be able to walk away from unscathed.

There was not enough grit to the story to carry it along and I quickly became bored with all the characters inner monologues of denying their feelings and excuses on why they could not be together. If there was a silver lining to the book I have to say that although it was predictable the ending was cute and nicely done.

Review :
A High Price To Pay For Money
In her tenth novel, Victoria Christopher Murray has penned an emotionally gripping story that has brought to life a cast of characters caught up in a tragedy as timeless and evocative as those of the Ancient Greeks or Shakespeare. Evia and Adam were a couple living the American Dream, until Adam lost his high paying corporate job. Now they find themselves living the American nightmare. There's more month than money and financial ruin is imminent, but there's a life raft - an offer of $5 Million Dollars if they'll.... They take the deal, but then their lives spin out of control. Murray convinces readers with a conviction of a skilled writer that you cannot, should not dance with the devil. I thought about this story long after I closed the book.

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight...you shouldn't
Adam and Evia Langston are experiencing financial lows because of unemployment, greed, and lust. Evia's supervisor Shay offers her a silly million dollar deal. Evia and Adam accept the deal and pay, royally. This is an average novel - starts slow and heats up towards the end. It is not christian fiction. The way Evia and Adam are described when they have sex should have been omitted. It is lengthy and sometimes boring.
It's not the typical Victoria Murray Book. Not enough suspense and too much whining. I understand it is fiction but life imitates art. This book was imaginative like a cartoon. I give it an OKAY rating because the message I got from it ---if you dance with the devil, you should expect to get burnt. To me, this is a positive message that is very useful.

strong inspirational family drama
As she nears her fiftieth birthday, wealthy Shay-Shaunte knows what she wants as her special present. Until Shay-Shaunte offers one of her executive assistant, Evia Langston five million dollars for a weekend with the latter's husband Adam. Stunned Evia says no thanks.

However, Evia knows her family could use the money as they are nearing financial ruin with the economy tanking. She also knows that when she and Adam exchanged vows in front of the Lord when they were seventeen, they pledged a faith based relationship to raise their kids in. Now Evia and Adam must choose between the she-devil serpent's glittering offering to save the Langston's Garden of Eden or trusting in God to take care of them and their children.

The immediate reaction is The Deal, the Dance, and the Devil is a gender bending version of Redford's Indecent Proposal to Moore and Harrelson; but that is only at the surface. Instead this is a much deeper profound character driven tale as...
